Arignar Anna Government Arts College is situated at the isolated Foothill of Vadachennimalai (North Chenni Hill) a small hill aboded with Lord Bala Thandayuthapani (Metamorphism of the God of Kurinji region, Lord Muruga). The place is bounded on the north by Kattukottai, South by Sadasivapuram, East by Thalaivasal and West by Attur. The nearest approachable bus stop kattukottai is just 9 km from Attur on the Salem-Cuddalore National Highway.
Topographically, the college is circumfused by Kalvarayan hills and Vasishta river on the north and Kolli-Pachamalai hills and Swetha (Vellar-white river) river on the South. Both the rivers derive their name after the Pandava Arjuna (Swetavahana) and Sage Vasishta respectively. The serenity of its surroundings is revealed by its copsy appearance favors the institution pleasant academic environs. Historical evidences show the antiquity of the area as well. The archaeological discoveries of the nearest places and epigraphical records testify the prehistoric dwellings of the area too. Despite, it will be worthy to mention about the Bana chieftains of Magadaimandalam during the medieval period. Banses established their headquarters at Aragalur very close to Vadachennimalai. Aragalur was in the Arrur Kurran of Jananatha Valanadu, of a subdivision of Magadaimandalam in the medieval Tamil Nadu. The epigraphical records show that the Banas were the feudatories of the imperial Cholas and Pandyas.
The college was functioning in a temporary building with minimum infrastructure at the beginning. The foundation stone for the construction of new building was laid by K.K.Shaw, the then hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu on 12th march 1972. It was opened by K.Rajaram, hon’ble Minister of Backward Welfare on 23rd October, 1973. At present it has sprang up to the extent of 6300 sq.meter of built area in the total area of 50 hectares(128 acers).
The name of the college has been christened after C.N. Annadurai, Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He is popularly known as Arignar Anna whose dictum is Duty, Dignity and Discipline.College Logo
