History of the College

                       Aringar Anna Government Arts College is located at the foot hills of Vadachennimalai in a 22 hectare area. The location is very serene and has a Natural architectural appearance. It is just 10 km distance from Attur, towards Kallakurichi in the Chennai Salem National Highway. The nearest approachable bus stop is Kattukottai on the National High way. The college gives more importance for imparting quality Education and Personality development.

This college was started by honorable minister Thiru K. Raja Ram on 3 rd July 1972. Initially 3 UG programme were started through Tamil and English Medium. As the college has no prober building and other necessary infrastructure, the college was operated in a temporary location.

Foundation Stone for the construction of a permanent building for the college was laid on 12th March 1972 by honorable Governor Mr. K. K. Shaw. The initial cost, nearly Rs. 5 lakh, for constructing the building, was borne by the Salem District Financial Committee.

 The new building was inaugurated by honorable Defense Minister Mr. Jagajeevan Ram on 23rd, October 1973. The first undergraduate programme B.A in Tamil commenced on 1973. Soon, the college was converted into co-educational institution in 1975

The college promoted to first grade college in 1976 and undergraduate programs like science and history were introduced.

  • 1979 - 1980 B.Sc. Chemistry was introduced
  • 1980 - 1981 B.Sc. Physics was introduced
  • 1986 - 1987 B.Com. was introduced
  • 1998 - 1999 B.Sc. Computer Science was introduced

            The new two floor building was inaugurated by honorable Educational Minister K. Anbazhagan during the academic year 1999 - 2000. The new building was constructed at the cost of Rs. 52 lakhs.

            During the academic year 2003 - 2004 the following new self-financed courses were started ;   B.A English, BBA, M.Com,  and M.Sc Computer Science. In the academic year 2004 - 2005 the Post Graduate Programmes like M.A Tamil and M.A History were introduced.

            During the 2012-2013 B.Sc. Botany and B.Sc Maths were introduced. M.A English, M.Sc Chemistry, M.Sc Physics were also introduced in the same year. Computer Science was upgraded as a Research Department and M.Phil course was offered. In the year 2014, Tamil Department was upgraded to a Research Department and M.Phil., and Ph. D courses were offered

            In 2014-2015 B.Sc Botany course in English Medium was approved by the Government and will function from 2015-2016.

            At present the college offers 9 UG courses and 7 PG courses.

Highlights

         This college is accredited B Grade by NAAC.

         Every year campus interview is also conducted in this college and students are placed in good companies with good salary.

         Students participate in sports activities and have been adding laurels to colleges by winning prizes at District level, State Level, and University Level.

            The Computer Literacy Programme was started by the Government of Tamil Nadu during the year 2000 - 2001 for non computer subject students. Certifica,...,

te is issued to every students on the successful completion of the course by the Government of Tamilnadu.

            The college has a library housed with nearly 20492 valuable books. Students can access this voluminous collection of books for reference. The College library also subscribes to various journals and Newspapers for the benefit of the students.

            The college also conducts various awareness programs at the subject level and in general for the benefit of the students.
